Nuova Simonelli is a leading manufacturer of espresso machines, grinders, and other coffee-related equipment. Founded by Orlando Simonelli, the company is renowned for its high-quality products and commitment to innovation.
The history of Nuova Simonelli
Today, Orlando Simonelli is a well-known entity in the coffee world that has been praised for his creativity and ingenuity. The brand that he founded, however, traces its roots from humble beginnings. In a homemade laboratory in a small town in the Marche region of Italy, he invented his first espresso machine. Dubbed the 1936 after the year of its construction, it was deemed as an innovation and was technically advanced for its time. It featured a 2-group column that made use of electrical heating, as well as a mains supply water pressure system. Simonelli himself took care of the commercialization of the product, and was also personally in charge of selling it.
Throughout the uncertainty of the post-war era, Simonelli remained focused on his goals and slowly began expanding his business. In 1948, he transferred his burgeoning company to the commune of Tolentino, and began to offer employment opportunities to its residents. In 1950, he unveiled the Selene, the very first coffee machine in the world that was capable of continuous dispensing. It was, like the 1936, hailed as a technological marvel. Nine years later, he followed it up with the launch of the revolutionary Eureka, which was equipped with two 5-liter boilers, a heat exchanger, and an oil pump.
After a long battle with illness, Simonelli unfortunately passed away in 1971. However, his workers decided to continue the legacy of the Simonelli brand: Nando Ottavi, Graziano Boldrini, Giovanni Feliziani, and Carlo Gesuelli bought the company, and Sandro Feliziani also joined two years later. Together, they rechristened the company as Nuova Simonelli (“New Simonelli” in Italian). They then transferred its headquarters to Belforte del Chienti, a commune that was well-known for harboring artisans.
It was during this time that Nuova Simonelli began to manufacture espresso machines designed to be used in the home. In 1973, they released the Elli, the very first Nuova Simonelli espresso machine for families and small communities. It featured an internal pump, heat exchanger, steam wand, and copper boiler–all in a neat and compact package. Other historic inventions followed: in 1975, the company introduced the ISX, the first coffee machine that featured electronic components. It was available in two versions: electronic and semi-automatic. In 1982, the company further improved on the idea for a Nuova Simonelli espresso machine for home use with the Mia, which was equipped with professional-grade components in an even more compact design than the Elli.
Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, Nuova Simonelli flourished. They were finally able to produce a super-automatic espresso machine, which they named the Logica. In this design, users could have a well-crafted espresso shot just by pressing a single button. The fully automatic design of the product was a global hit, allowing the business to expand into the United States and build a headquarters in Ferndale, Washington.
Today, Nuova Simonelli continues to be an industry leader in espresso machines, grinders, and other coffee-related equipment. The company’s commitment to quality and innovation has allowed it to remain at the top of the industry for more than 85 years. Whether you’re a home barista or a professional, Nuova Simonelli has the tools you need to make the perfect cup of espresso.

The Aurelia Wave is the improved version of the original Aurelia. Designed for consistency and productivity, the brand is proud to call it “the workflow optimizer”. Equipped with Aurelia Wave UX, it comes with a high-resolution display screen that allows the barista to have unparalleled control over the device. Through this screen, the user can easily program the desired dosage, boiler pressure, and pre-infusion. This Nuova Simonelli also features energy saving settings that can help your establishment cut down on power consumption. It is recommended for high volume locations, and can be depended on in demanding environments.
Appia Life
Launched in 2005 to widespread acclaim, the Appia bears many resemblances to the Aurelia. This semi-automatic and volumetric Nuova Simonelli espresso machine also possesses the autosteam ability, as well as programming the temperature of the milk to be heated. It also features the company’s proprietary SIS (soft infusion system), which reduces the necessity of a proper tamping technique without compromising the quality of the pulled shot, thus reducing human error.
The Appia Life was introduced in 2019. A notable improvement over its predecessor flagship, it features all the things that baristas loved about the Appia, with a few innovations. The Appia Life can prepare up to 250 cappuccinos (for the 2-group version) daily, thanks to the combination of the SIS system and the Easycream system that enables the barista to quickly make a thick and velvety milk cream. It is also equipped with DRYTEX THERMICAL technology insulation, and consumes 13% less energy than the Appia II.
